Syria has entered a new phase following the announcement of the dissolution of the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), the Autonomous Administration, and their affiliated military and civilian structures, alongside the completion of their integration into state institutions under the January 29 agreement. The move has received regional and international support and raised expectations regarding its impact on security, stability, and Syria’s territorial unity, after years in which northeastern areas maintained separate administrative and military structures outside the central state institutions.
The announcement was made by the former commander of the SDF, Mustafa Khalil Abdi, known as Mazloum Abdi, during a press conference at the People’s Palace in Damascus. It marked the beginning of a new phase of institutional implementation, involving the dissolution of the SDF, the Autonomous Administration, and their affiliated structures, followed by their full integration into state institutions, including governorates, ministries, and directorates. This process is taking place alongside the reactivation of government institutions in the Jazira region and the state’s assumption of administrative control.
The significance of this development lies in the complexity of the issue, which has remained one of Syria’s most challenging political and security files since the fall of the Assad regime. The new Syrian state has sought to reunify the country, extend its authority across all its territory, unify the security, military, and administrative sectors, uphold the rule of law, and restore state control over economic resources. Particular attention has been given to the Jazira region, where stability has long been linked to reaching an arrangement that ends the duplication of institutions and military forces.
