The Syrian Revolution
As university admission results draw closer, one of the most sensitive moments in the lives of high school students and their families comes back into focus: choosing a university major.
Once the excitement of success fades and each student learns their final score, a question more important than the grade itself emerges: What will I study? And who will actually make that decision?
In many Syrian households, the answer is not straightforward. The student may have a long-held dream or personal interest, while their grades open doors they never expected. Meanwhile, the family may believe that its experience and concern for the student’s future give it a greater right to determine the path ahead.
Between these three forces, choosing a university major can sometimes turn from an opportunity to begin a professional life into a silent struggle that may last for years.
A high score, which should be the reward for hard work and an opportunity for greater freedom of choice, can sometimes become a reason to disregard personal aspirations. A student whose grades qualify them for medicine or pharmacy, for example, may find themselves having to justify their choice if they decide to study media, mathematics, computer engineering, or any other field.
